Caution: Cold aggravates breathing problems

During extreme cold weather, one often sees cautionary columns in the newspaper and on television, but rarely do those stories mention a particular health problem that makes keeping safe and warm during cold weather even more important.

If you suffer from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), you may already have a hard time breathing some or all of the time, but cold weather can really act to constrict the passages in your lungs, making it even harder. (Extremes of temperature, even warmer temperatures can exacerbate symptoms.)
